Ford has announced the return of the iconic Capri nameplate, this time as a tall electric hatchback. The new Ford Capri EV, set to enhance its appeal in the modern market, is slated for release soon.

Design and Legacy

While the new Capri is billed as a coupe SUV, it resembles a hatchback on stilts more than a traditional coupe. This marks a significant departure from the classic two-door coupe design, yet it incorporates several design elements that nod to its heritage. The headlights and faux grille harken back to the Mark 2 Capri, and the fastback rear end with rectangular light clusters is reminiscent of the original model built between 1968 and 1986.

Specifications and Features

The new Ford Capri measures 182.44 inches in length, making it longer than the new Ford Explorer EV and slightly shorter than the Mustang Mach-E. It features wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches and comes in colors inspired by the classic Capri palette. Inside, it boasts a 14.6-inch infotainment screen with Ford Sync Move 2, which can swivel to reveal additional storage, and a minimalist dashboard design.

The Capri offers a spacious 20.1 cubic-inch (570-liter) trunk, expandable to 1,510 liters by folding the rear seats. Built on Volkswagen's MEB platform, it shares components with the VW ID.4 and is Ford’s interpretation of the coupe-like ID.5.

Performance and Range

The base version of the Capri is equipped with a single 286-horsepower motor on the rear axle, achieving 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds with a top speed of 112 mph. It uses a 77 kWh battery pack for a claimed WLTP range of 389 miles. The dual-motor variant, with a motor on the front axle, offers 340 horsepower, a 0-62 mph time of 5.3 seconds, and a slightly larger 79 kWh battery with a range of 368 miles.

Charging and Options

The rear-motor version can charge from 10% to 80% in 28 minutes at 135 kW, while the dual-motor version charges in 26 minutes at 185 kW. Both have an 11 kW onboard AC charger. Notable options include a heat pump, upgraded AGR-certified front seats, a panoramic glass roof, and a range of safety systems such as cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.

Production and Pricing

Ford will produce the Capri exclusively for Europe at its newly upgraded Cologne factory in Germany, following a $2 billion investment. The base price for the rear-wheel-drive model is set at €51,950, with potential for a more affordable version in the future.

The return of the Ford Capri as an electric vehicle signifies Ford’s commitment to blending nostalgia with modern innovation, offering a new standard in the EV market.
