Tesla marked a series of significant victories for its electric vehicle (EV) charging technology on Tuesday, culminating with Texas declaring that EV charging companies must support both Tesla's standard and the Combined Charging System (CCS) if they want to participate in a state program that uses federal funds to electrify highways.
This announcement followed the news earlier in the day, first reported by Reuters, that electric pickup truck maker Rivian and charger manufacturer BTC Power had decided to support Tesla's charging standard. These developments come on the heels of recent decisions by General Motors (GM) and Ford (F) to incorporate Tesla's charging technology into their EVs, sidestepping efforts by the Biden administration to make CCS the dominant charging standard in the United States.
The growing support for Tesla's charging standard signals a significant shift in the EV industry and could potentially reshape the charging landscape in North America, giving EV owners greater flexibility and compatibility with different charging networks. While CCS has been broadly accepted as the national standard, Tesla's proprietary charging technology has been favored by many due to its widespread network and fast charging times.
