Tesla Recalls All Cybertrucks Due to Faulty Accelerator Pedals

Tesla has initiated a recall of all 3,878 Cybertrucks shipped to date due to a potentially dangerous issue where the accelerator pedal can become stuck, increasing the risk of accidents. This recall was announced amid a challenging week for the electric vehicle giant, which included significant workforce reductions and executive departures.

Details of the Fault

The problem, as outlined by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), involves the accelerator pedal dislodging and becoming trapped in the trim of the footwell. This defect could lead to unintended acceleration incidents. Tesla reported to the NHTSA that while there have been no crashes or injuries known to be associated with this issue, the potential risk prompted immediate action.

Discovery and Response

Tesla first became aware of the issue when a customer reported a malfunction on March 31, followed by a second report on April 3. Subsequent tests led to the decision on April 12 to recall the vehicles after discovering that an unapproved application of lubricant during assembly could decrease the pedal’s pad retention.

Corrective Actions and Ongoing Safety Measures

Tesla has assured the public and the NHTSA that all affected Cybertrucks will have their accelerator pedals replaced or reworked to meet safety standards. The company has also revised the manufacturing process to include a new accelerator pedal design in all future Cybertrucks. Vehicles currently in transit or at delivery centers are being fixed to prevent any issues for new owners.

Background and Previous Recalls

This recall comes shortly after Tesla started delivering the Cybertruck, which first debuted in 2019. Although Tesla had to recall the software across all its vehicle models earlier this year due to a minor issue with the warning light font size, this marks the first significant mechanical recall for the Cybertruck.

As Tesla navigates these recalls and corporate challenges, the company remains committed to ensuring the safety and reliability of its innovative vehicles, reinforcing its dedication to customer satisfaction and vehicle excellence.
