Tesla has officially launched its next-generation Smart Summon feature, aptly named "Actually Smart Summon" (ASS), after years of anticipation and several delays. This updated feature, which allows Tesla vehicles to autonomously navigate parking lots to reach the owner or a designated location, has been a long time coming.
A Rocky History: ASS is the evolution of Tesla's original Smart Summon, a feature that has seen numerous setbacks. When Tesla shifted to a vision-only system in 2022, several features, including Smart Summon, were temporarily disabled. Despite multiple promises from CEO Elon Musk that the feature would return, its re-release was repeatedly postponed, frustrating many Tesla owners who had paid for these advanced capabilities but were left waiting.
The Wait is Over: As of September 2024, Tesla has finally rolled out ASS as part of its latest Full Self-Driving (FSD) update. This new version boasts improved spatial awareness and the ability to navigate complex parking environments with greater precision. Tesla’s playful introduction of the feature—"Buckle up for the ride of your life, except, surprise! You're not in the car"—belies the sophisticated technology underpinning this highly anticipated update.
Why This Matters: The reintroduction of ASS is more than just a software update; it’s a significant milestone for Tesla in its journey toward fully autonomous driving. For many Tesla owners, this release not only fulfills long-standing promises but also showcases Tesla’s ongoing commitment to innovation, even in the face of technical challenges and delays.
