Tesla Dominates 2023 American-Made Index; Claims Top Four Spots
Tesla, a pioneer in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, has once again showcased its dominance as an American automaker, clinching the top four positions in Cars.com's 2023 American-Made Index (AMI).
The list, an annual evaluation of which automakers and models can be classified as the most "American-made", noted that Tesla's Model Y, Model 3, Model X, and Model S have led the pack. This is credited to Tesla's vertical integration approach that enables the company to manufacture a substantial percentage of its parts within the US.
In this year's review, 388 vehicles were considered, with only 100 making the cut. Interestingly, Tesla was the only American automaker to feature in the top 10. The list comprised of four vehicles from Japanese automaker Acura/Honda and one from German auto giant Volkswagen with its electric ID.4 model, making it the first time Volkswagen has appeared in the AMI's top 10.
This achievement could pave the way for EV manufacturers to explore vertical integration and the development of localized supply chains. Notably, the ID.4's appearance brings the total number of electric vehicles in the top 10 to five, demonstrating a growing trend in American-made EVs.
Recent legislation encouraging battery production in North America and sourcing materials from countries with free trade agreements may further stimulate this trend, reinforcing the opportunity for American EV manufacturers to bolster local production.
