Rivian has taken the wraps off its latest electric innovations, the R3 and R3X SUVs, joining the ranks alongside the much-anticipated R2 SUV. Designed on the same platform as the R2, the R3 and its more rugged counterpart, the R3X, are set to become Rivian's entry-level offerings, anticipated to hit the market around 2027.
Compact Yet Mighty
The R3 models sport a wheelbase that's approximately five inches shorter than the R2, optimizing them for agility and urban maneuverability without sacrificing Rivian's signature aesthetic. The design features the brand's familiar face, smooth body panels, and wheels positioned aggressively at the corners for a stance that's as commanding as it is functional. The power-operated rear hatch, complete with a full-width taillight and a separately opening glass section, underscores Rivian's focus on practicality and style.
Performance and Practicality
Leveraging the R2's drivetrain configurations, the R3 is expected to boast an impressive range of over 300 miles on a single charge, with fast-charging capabilities that can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes. Potential buyers will have the option to choose between a single motor driving the rear wheels for efficiency or a dual-motor setup offering all-wheel drive versatility.
The R3X: Rugged Redefined
The R3X elevates the adventure-ready design of the R3 with a tri-motor powertrain derived from the highest-output Rivian R2 configuration. This model stands out with wider wheels and tires, increased ground clearance, and distinctive teal paint accented with orange on the exterior mirrors and front tow hooks. The '80s rally-car inspired wheels and aggressive tread on the tires promise uncompromised performance off the beaten path.
Inside, the R3X charms with what can only be described as Italian-inspired ribbed seats, alongside a spacious glass roof that brightens the cabin. Both the R3 and R3X feature fold-flat seats front and rear, offering a convenient makeshift sleeping area for adventurers.

While exact figures are yet to be announced, the Rivian R3 and R3X are expected to be more accessible than the larger R2 model. Predictions place the R3 in the $35K–$40K range, with the R3X potentially starting between $45K–$55K, making them competitive entries into the burgeoning electric SUV market.
