Rivian Acquires A Better Routeplanner, Rolls Out Enhanced Trip-Planning Features

Posted on June 22, 2023

Following its recent acquisition of Swedish mapping company Iternio, the creator of A Better Routeplanner (ABRP), electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has unveiled a host of trip-planning enhancements designed to optimize EV journey planning.

Rivian made the announcement on Thursday that the two companies were in advanced talks. ABRP is one of the most popular trip-planning tools in the US and Europe, assisting millions of EV drivers in optimizing their journeys by taking into account factors such as charging needs and weather conditions.

The ABRP app operates on a React Native cross-platform framework and is available on five platforms: iOS, Android, Web, CarPlay, and Android Auto. It is currently featured in the Polestar 2 vehicle.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe indicated that ABRP's capabilities will be integrated into Rivian's upcoming trip-planning release, which will include several new upgrades.

The new enhancements were promptly rolled out in Rivian's latest software update. These include "significant enhancements to trip planning" using the vehicle's navigation system and the launch of ABRP-powered trip planning via Rivian's mobile app.

R1T and R1S drivers now have the ability to customize route planning and preferred arrival range from their mobile app or center display. After entering a destination, the app provides details such as the drivable distance with the current range, route outline, charging options, estimated stop durations, and the anticipated range upon arrival. The app also allows for the avoidance of highways, tolls, and ferries and facilitates the saving of frequent routes.

According to Rivian, this is just the first in a series of planned trip-planning upgrades aimed at enhancing user experience. The company is also working on incorporating multiple stops into trip planning and providing more charging customization options.
