In a significant move towards enhancing the EV charging infrastructure, Swedish electric performance car brand Polestar has inked a deal with Tesla to adopt the new North American Charging Standard (NACS). This move will grant all Polestar drivers in the United States and Canada access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network.
Starting from 2025, new Polestar vehicles sold in North America will be equipped with the NACS charging port as standard. The company plans to release adapters in mid-2024 to allow existing Polestar drivers to easily access the network.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "This is a great win for our North American customers! We salute the pioneering work Tesla has done to speed up the adoption and increase the popularity of electric vehicles, and it’s great to see the Supercharger network being made available in this way. With 12,000 charging points today, a number that will only keep growing, this move will greatly increase the rate of EV adoption in a key automotive region."
This agreement is applicable to both current and future Polestar models. To ensure compatibility with existing Combined Charging System (CCS) public fast charging infrastructure in North America, future NACS-equipped Polestar vehicles will be supplied with a CCS adapter.
Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) has been at the forefront of accelerating the shift towards sustainable mobility by using design and technology to create innovative electric performance cars. With its cars available online in 27 markets worldwide across North America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific, the brand has been expanding its footprint globally.
The company plans to have a line-up of five performance EVs by 2026. Launched in 2019, the Polestar 2, an electric performance fastback, was followed by Polestar 3, the SUV for the electric age, in late 2022. Polestar 4, the SUV coupé transformed, is set to launch in phases through 2023 and into 2024. The electric four-door GT Polestar 5 and the electric roadster, Polestar 6, are soon to hit the roads.
Polestar’s ambitious 'Polestar 0 project' aims to create a truly climate-neutral production car by 2030, thereby catalyzing a sense of urgency to act on the climate crisis and driving the wider automotive industry towards zero.
