For those with a taste for nostalgia and a penchant for eco-friendly driving, the Moke EV offers a unique blend of retro charm and modern electric technology. Priced at $41,990, this British-inspired ultra-lightweight electric vehicle (EV) is now available in the U.S., promising to turn heads and evoke the spirit of the 1960s with every drive.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

The Moke EV draws inspiration from the original Mini Moke, a minimalist masterpiece designed by Alec Issigonis in 1959. The original Mini Moke, initially intended as a parachute-deployable troop transporter for the British army, was reimagined as a civilian vehicle due to its small size and open design. The vehicle found a niche market in temperate climates where its lack of doors and roof was less of an issue. Its playful design even earned it a spot in the cult 1960s British sci-fi show The Prisoner.

Modern Design and Performance

Fast forward to today, the Moke EV has been reborn with modern updates. Produced by Moke International in the U.K., this new version retains the classic look but with significant improvements. The Moke EV features a 44-horsepower motor, allowing it to reach a top speed of 50 mph, making it perfect for leisurely coastal drives rather than interstate travel. A lithium-ion battery pack provides a range of up to 74 miles under Europe’s WLTP testing protocol, though it’s more suited for short, scenic trips.

Regulatory Blessing

Thanks to the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, the Moke EV is set to be highway legal in the U.S., with annual sales limited to 325 units. This act allows small-volume car manufacturers to sell replica vehicles, provided they meet certain criteria. The Moke EV, with its rear-mounted motor and charming retro aesthetics, fits the bill perfectly.

Comparing the Competition

While Moke America also offers a similar EV, their version is less powerful, featuring only a 19-horsepower motor with a top speed of 25 mph. Priced at $22,975, it’s nearly half the cost of the Moke EV but is restricted to Neighborhood Electric Vehicle areas due to its lower performance. In contrast, the Moke EV’s higher power and speed make it a more versatile option for those looking to enjoy a blend of classic style and modern performance.

A Lifestyle Choice

The Moke EV isn’t just a car; it’s a lifestyle choice. It harks back to a simpler time while embracing the future of sustainable transport. Perfect for beach trips, weekend getaways, or just a fun drive around town, this EV is sure to appeal to those who value both style and sustainability.
