In a move towards standardization and convenience for EV owners, Mercedes-Benz announced on Friday that its electric vehicles in North America will adopt Tesla-developed charging technology by 2025. Furthermore, the company's EVs will gain access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers from next year.
This announcement positions Mercedes-Benz alongside American automakers Ford and General Motors, who have also chosen to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in their quest to broaden their network of fast-charging stations, thereby facilitating EV ownership.
Adoption of a universal charging standard like NACS is expected to remove one of the major hurdles in the mass adoption of electric vehicles - the lack of interoperable charging infrastructure. This move will enable Mercedes-Benz EV owners to utilize Tesla's widespread Supercharger network, which is regarded as one of the most extensive and efficient in the world.
This development represents a significant collaboration between two of the auto industry's biggest names and could potentially set a precedent for other automakers to follow suit, fostering greater EV adoption globally.
Further details about the collaboration, such as any financial agreements between Tesla and Mercedes-Benz or how access to the Supercharger network will be managed for Mercedes-Benz drivers, have not been disclosed at this time. The specifics of the integration process will likely emerge closer to the rollout in 2025.
