Hyundai has launched pre-orders for its latest budget-friendly electric vehicle, the Casper Electric, in Korea. Priced at $22,800 (31.5 million won), the Casper Electric is expected to drop to under $14,500 (20 million won) with government incentives and rebates.
Introducing the Casper Electric
Following several teasers, Hyundai unveiled the Casper Electric, known as the Inster EV in Europe, last month. The Casper Electric aims to set a new standard for making electric vehicles more accessible to the masses. It is based on the gas-powered Casper already available in Korea but comes with a modern design featuring Hyundai’s signature DRL headlights and pixelated turn signals, similar to the new 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric.
Performance and Features
The Casper Electric boasts a driving range of up to 196 miles (315 km) in Korea, and up to 221 miles (255 km) in the WLTP range for Europe. It supports fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. Additionally, it includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, enabling the powering of electronics, tools, or home appliances directly from the car.
Competitive Pricing and Market Position
The Casper Electric is priced similarly to its gas-powered counterpart, which starts at roughly $15,000. Hyundai has made the new EV available for pre-order in Korea, with the base "Inspiration" model starting at $22,800. After applying government incentives and rebates, the price is expected to be as low as $14,500.
A Hyundai official highlighted the strategic pricing, stating, “In order to truly popularize electric vehicles, we have prepared the Casper Electric with unrivaled product competitiveness and reasonable price.” The official added that the Casper Electric aims to become the most attractive choice for many customers considering an electric vehicle.
Design and Interior
The Casper Electric offers more second-row and trunk space compared to the gas-powered model. The interior features dual 10.25-inch infotainment and driver display screens, a steering wheel with interactive pixel lights, and ambient lighting, enhancing the driving experience.
Future Variants
Hyundai plans to release additional premium and off-road variants of the Casper Electric soon, expanding the lineup and offering more options for consumers.
This launch underscores Hyundai’s commitment to making electric vehicles more affordable and accessible, setting a new benchmark in the industry.
