In an effort to combat climate change, Detroit has announced that all of its municipal buildings will be powered by neighborhood solar as part of an innovative new initiative dubbed 'Detroit Rock Solar City'.
Detroit's ambitious plan requires approximately 250 acres of solar panels to achieve 100% solar power for its municipal buildings. The city has turned to its neighborhoods and block clubs, inviting them to host solar farms on their properties in exchange for shared benefits.
Suitable solar field sites must range between 10 and 50 acres. For every acre of solar panels installed, $25,000 in community benefits will be allocated for neighborhood projects, such as park and recreation improvements, home repairs, and solar power for neighboring homes.
Ray Solomon, Director of Detroit's Department of Neighborhoods, stated: "If we decide a neighborhood's proposal is a good fit, we will have conversations with the residents to determine what they want and need to help create more energy-efficient and climate resilient homes, or to improve their shared spaces."
Another benefit of this innovative project is its potential to combat urban blight. Vacant tracts could be transformed into fenced-in solar parks, helping to curb illegal dumping.
From July 1, groups of at least five neighbors can fill out a community interest form on the city’s website, with applications accepted through October 2. The city has also made provisions for neighborhoods to request assistance from a nonprofit or other solar energy expert to help them draft their plans.
In its announcement, the city emphasized that solar fields would only be placed in neighborhoods that request them and has issued a Request for Information from solar developers to aid in the design of the new solar parks. Decisions on the proposals are expected to be made this fall.
