Tesla, in its ongoing pursuit of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy, has announced the opening of its Electric Vehicle (EV) connector design to the world. The Tesla charging connector, now known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), has over a decade of use and 20 billion EV charging miles to its name. It's the most proven charging connector in North America, offering AC charging and up to 1 MW DC charging in a slim package. It is half the size and twice as powerful as Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors​​.

Tesla invites charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to adopt the NACS for their equipment and vehicles. The NACS is currently the most common charging standard in North America, with NACS vehicles outnumbering CCS vehicles two-to-one. Additionally, Tesla's Supercharging network has 60% more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined​​.

Network operators are already making plans to incorporate NACS into their chargers. This development means that Tesla owners can look forward to charging at other networks without needing adapters. Tesla also anticipates future electric vehicles incorporating the NACS design and charging at Tesla’s North American Supercharging and Destination Charging networks​1​.

The NACS is designed to be straightforward to adopt, being a purely electrical and mechanical interface that is agnostic to use case and communication protocol. Tesla has made the design and specification files available for download and is actively working with relevant standards bodies to establish the charging connector as a public standard​.
